Mezzanines

Mezzanine floors allow increased warehouse volume utilisation without sacrificing accessibility. The layout can be in lanes or catwalks which allow clothing to hang between the floor, or in full coverage.

Multi-level structures are constructed from galvanised tubing and clamps which allow for quick assembly and simple on-site modification.

For mezzanine floors and catwalks, GMS Systems generally uses epoxy coated slotted steel panel flooring. It has the following benefits, when compared with steel plate or wooden flooring:
  • It allows improved air ventilation
  • Fire reticulation requirements may be reduced as water can pass through the floor
  • Lighting requirements can be reduced, as light from the upper level will contribute to the illumination on the ground level
  • Water will not damage the floor
  • The flooring has a safe, functional and aesthetic appeal
Kickplates are installed around all catwalks and mezzanines to improve the safety of operators on and under the mezzanine.

To see a project where mezzanines were extensively used, go to the Fashion World Projects page.

Staircases

Staircases are constructed from open steel flooring panels and channels, and are transported in component form and bolted together on site.

Either 30° or 45° angles can be selected, and widths of 600mm, 900mm or 1,2m can be manufactured.

Powered Conveyors

For transferring garments on trolleys between levels, the Rogol conveyor is used. It is competitively priced, operates in a straight line in plan, utilising a standard transmission chain with nylon outrigger wheels and has aluminium drive toggles. The conveyor unit is designed and manufactured by GMS Systems, and the first unit was installed over 20 years ago. The design has been continually improved, requires minimal maintenance and runs quietly.

GMS Systems offers a variety of powered overhead conveyor systems which are compatible with the manual monorail to provide a power and free system. To see details of an installation of a Conveyors International overhead conveyor, see the Triumph Projects page.

Wooden Shelving

For clients who need to store a mixture of flat and hanging merchandise, or who have seasonal variations in product format, a flexible shelving system has been developed. This addition allows flat items to be stored and handled together with hanging garments.

The wooden shelf is a slatted dry pine shelf with batons which fit onto static storage rails. The shelf is manufactured in 1.5m lengths to fit between tubing stanchions, and is 900mm wide. It can easily be lifted off the rail supports, and removed when not required, and is not fastened to the structure.

Monorail Trolleys

The monorail trolley is the basis of the garment handling system, and can be manually pushed on a tubular rail or driven under power. To see an installation of a monorail trolley system under power, go to the Triumph Projects page.

The standard trolley is 1m long, utilises four bearings in nylon running wheels and two thrust bearings. Trolleys of various lengths for carrying garment sets, for jacket manufacture, and single wheel trolleys are also manufactured.

For carrying garments in double-tier format, trapezium trolleys can be hooked onto a standard trolley.

For carrying cartons and tote-bins, hangtainers (or gondolas) can be suspended off a standard trolley.

Double-tier Trapezium Trolley

The double-tier trapezium trolley is a 1m long galvanised tube with two solid bar hooks which allow it to attach onto a standard trolley, forming a two-tier trolley. This arrangement can only be used for shorter garments (760 mm or less), and doubles the trolley capacity.

For a standard GMS Systems monorail trolley, please see the Monorail trolley information.

Hangtainers (or Gondolas)

The hangtainer (or gondola) allows flat items to be handled on an overhead monorail in cartons or plastic containers. It is collapsible for easy storage and can be pivoted to allow transfers between levels to take place on an incline.

For a standard GMS Systems monorail trolley, please see the Monorail trolley information.

Set Holder for Hanging Garments

GMS Systems announces the launch of a wire set holder to handle a batch of hanging garments. A coded cable tie is used to seal the set of garments on hangers (goh), which is broken at store receiving, allowing the set holder to be recycled.

The set holder can be used to replace set hooks or by anybody involved in the distribution or handling of garments.

Advantages over single garment handling
  • Improved handling of large garment volumes
  • Elimination of garment damage due to crushing or dropping of garments
  • Improved security
  • Elimination of hangers falling off rails in transit
Advantages over set hooks
  • Significant cost saving over set hooks
  • Increased vehicle or container utilisation
  • Much smaller and easier to recycle
  • Two sizes available (standard & half size)
  • Can be operated using one hand for increased efficiency
  • Combination security seal

Applications - the set holder can be used by:

  • Clothing manufacturers:
    • To batch garments for despatch and reduce handling
  • Clothing retailers:
    • To save costs throughout the supply chain
    • To maintain garment quality
    • To reduce shrinkage by improving security
  • Transporters & Third-party Logistics companies:
    • To improve service quality and reduce costs
    • To ensure hangers do not derail in transi
Operation

A batch of garments on hangers (goh) are placed on a rail. The set holder is then slid over the hanger ends and a cable tie is applied to secure the seal bar onto the batch of hangers. The set holder is 190mm long, holding an average 20 garments.

The set holder is now ready for use and the set of garments can be transferred onto another rail, trolley or vehicle by lifting the handle. This can be done using one or two hands.

The cable tie (or seal) is cut at the final destination and the set holder can be slipped off the rail and returned for re-use.

The set holders are supplied in a box containing 1000 units.

Trolley Guides

To prevent trolleys from derailing at critical bends and loading bays, a trolley guide can be added to keep the trolley in position.

The Telescopic Loading Boom for Vehicle Loading

The telescopic loading boom for vehicle loading is a 6m long triangular lattice boom fabricated from galvanised tubing. The boom has two axle sets, each with machined steel wheels running in a set of steel parallel flanged channels. The boom can extend to a maximum of 4m from the Distribution Centre door. From this point, a series of 3m long removable rails can be clipped onto the end of the boom, allowing trolleys to be fed from the unpacking face of the container or vehicle. The removable rails are supported off the transverse vehicle rails by means of a chain and clip arrangement.

Standard Clamps

The standard GMS Systems clamps are manufactured from cast aluminium and galvanised pressed steel.

Switches

Switches are manually operated and control the trolley routes in much the same way as points on a railway line.

The switches are machined to tight tolerances, are galvanised and provide a low maintenance, trouble-free operation.
